In 1826, William Morgan announced he intended to publish a book which exposed the secrets of Freemasonry. A group of Freemasons set out to stop the book's publication. They kidnapped Morgan, but no one knows what happened to him after that. The event, which became known as "The Morgan Affair," had a wide ranging impact not only on the Freemasons, but on the US as well. It was a catalyst for the formation of the first third political party in the US, The Anti-Masonic Party, and its impact in some respects extends to today. It is most likely the 19th century's most enigmatic cold case.
